An interview with Cam Christian, founder of PlantLanta

Cam Christian is the founder of PlantLanta, an organization that educates children and young adults on the capabilities and importance of being able to grow your own food, caring for our environment, and inspiring their peers to do the same. Cam is also a musician, and he came out to DJ for our groundbreaking events at Stonecrest Library and Clarkston Library to make all that hard work a lot more enjoyable!

We wanted to know more about Cam and how to get involved with PlantLanta. We sent him a few questions and here’s what he had to say:

Roots Down: Why is it important for young people to get involved with agriculture?

Cam Christian: It's a direct connection to the source. I developed my relationship with the Earth through gardening and farming. Feeling the dirt with our bare hands and feet is necessary. Understanding the power of soil and seeds helps us get back to center and realize what's important and what's worth protecting. Especially as technology continues to advance.

Once we see the harmony of how all the elements work together, I believe we as a society can take some sort of responsibility and accountability for how we've contributed to harming our environment and how we can reverse these effects. We always want more & more but we already have everything we need. We're already provided for.

Roots Down: Do you remember your first-ever favorite song or album?

Cam Christian: “At Last” by Etta James. When I first heard it, I fell in love with music. I was riding in the car with my parents one night and it came on the radio. I was like 6 or 7. I've never felt anything like that before prior to that moment. I remember instantly being transported. I felt like I was IN the song. It's hard to explain but it was magical. Something like in that Disney movie, Soul.

Roots Down: What's the best way for people to get involved with PlantLanta?

Cam Christian: Follow us on our social media platforms. Mainly Instagram or Facebook. When we have an opportunity, this is usually where we'll post it first. You can also join our email list. Just scroll to the bottom of www.PlantlantaStateUniversity.org and enter your email address.
